A Certificate of Analysis (COA) is a document that records information about a specific lot of a material. For researchers, it is the bridge between a physical sample and its recorded characteristics. This article explains what a COA generally contains and how to use one — without making any claim about a particular lot you have not yet received.
What a COA may include
Depending on the material and the issuing party, a COA may include fields such as:
- Product / material name and chemical identity
- Lot or batch identifier
- Appearance or physical description
- Analytical results, where testing was performed
- Date of analysis and any storage or handling notes
Not every material ships with every field, and availability differs from product to product. At Northeast Research Supply, documentation availability is identified on the applicable product page rather than assumed. We do not attach purity figures or testing claims to a lot unless documentation supports them for that specific lot.
How researchers use a COA
A COA lets you associate documentation with the material in your inventory, supports traceability across an experiment, and helps you record provenance for later review. Pair it with the Safety Data Sheet for hazard and handling information.
