Lot Traceability: Why Batch Identification Matters in Research Supply

Traceability is the thread that connects a physical sample to its records. Without a lot or batch identifier, a Certificate of Analysis or Safety Data Sheet cannot be reliably tied to the material in front of you. This article explains why batch identification matters and how to preserve it.

What lot traceability provides

  • Association: documentation can be matched to the exact material it describes.
  • Reproducibility: experiments can reference the specific lot used.
  • Record-keeping: provenance is preserved for later review.

Preserving traceability in your lab

Record the lot identifier when the material arrives, carry it onto any secondary container labels, and keep the associated documentation with your inventory. When a material is identified by lot or batch where applicable, that identifier is what allows documentation to be associated with the corresponding material.

How Northeast Research Supply approaches it

Materials are identified by lot or batch where applicable, and documentation availability is stated on the product page. We do not represent testing results for a lot unless documentation supports them for that specific lot. Learn more on our Quality & Documentation page.
