Analytical Identification of Phenibut
Confirming the identity and characterizing the quality of a research material is a documentation exercise. The techniques below are those a laboratory commonly uses to identify a compound such as Phenibut HCl. This page describes the methods; it does not report results for any specific lot.
Chromatography
- HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) — separates components and supports identity and relative composition assessment against a reference standard.
- LC-MS / GC-MS — couples separation with mass spectrometry to confirm molecular mass and fragmentation consistent with the expected structure.
Spectroscopy
- NMR (1H and 13C) — confirms the hydrogen and carbon environments consistent with 4-amino-3-phenylbutanoic acid.
- FTIR — identifies characteristic functional-group absorptions (amine, carboxyl, aromatic).
Physical & wet-chemical checks
- Melting point — a classic identity/purity indicator.
- Titration — can assess acid/base content for an amino-acid salt.
