“Research Use Only” (RUO) is more than a label. It defines the intended purpose of a material and the responsibilities that come with buying it. This article explains what the designation means and why Northeast Research Supply applies it strictly.
What RUO means
An RUO material is intended exclusively for legitimate laboratory, analytical, educational, and scientific research. It is not intended for human or animal consumption and is not sold as a food, dietary supplement, drug, medication, cosmetic, or consumer health product. No statement on this website has been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Why the designation exists
RUO keeps the purpose of a material unambiguous. It separates materials meant for the bench from products meant for people, and it sets the expectation that purchasers are qualified to handle research chemicals responsibly.
Purchaser responsibility
By purchasing research materials, the purchaser represents that the material is being obtained for a lawful research, analytical, scientific, or educational purpose. Purchasers are responsible for determining whether acquisition, possession, handling, storage, transportation, and intended use comply with applicable federal, state, and local requirements. Availability of a material should not be read as a representation that it may lawfully be purchased, possessed, or used for every purpose or in every jurisdiction.
