Two kinds of entry in that table

The list above mixes two things that behave very differently, and reading it as a single flat set of “properties” is a common source of confusion. Some entries are invariants of the compound: the molecular formula, the molecular weight, the functional groups present, the amphoteric character that follows from having both an amine and a carboxyl group. These are derived from the structure. They do not vary from one lot to the next, they are not measured on arrival, and there is no meaningful sense in which a particular sample could disagree with them — if it did, it would not be this compound.

Other entries describe a sample rather than the compound. Appearance is an observation of the material in front of you. How a given sample behaves when it is dissolved or heated depends on that sample. These entries can legitimately differ between lots without anything being wrong, which is exactly why they belong on lot documentation and the invariants do not.

Why a reported value depends on how it was obtained

A property is inseparable from the procedure used to establish it, and a value quoted without its method is difficult to compare with anything.

  • Appearance is observed, not measured. A description such as “white to off-white crystalline powder” is a range of acceptable observation, not a graded scale. Crystal habit, particle size and the light the material is viewed under all shift the impression, so two competent observers can describe the same sample slightly differently without either being mistaken.
  • Thermal behaviour depends on technique. How a solid responds to heating varies with the instrument and the heating rate, and an amino-acid hydrochloride may decompose rather than melt cleanly. Where that happens a single sharp figure misrepresents what actually occurs, and the observed onset is characteristic of the method as much as of the material.
  • Solubility statements are qualitative until a procedure is attached. Describing the salt as water-soluble records a qualitative fact about the form. Turning that into a figure requires a stated solvent, a stated temperature and a defined endpoint; without them, two numbers from two sources are not comparable.

None of this makes reported characterization data unreliable. It makes it contextual, which is why the analytical methods behind such observations are set out separately under analytical identification.

Stability & storage considerations

As with many amino-acid hydrochlorides, Phenibut HCl should be kept in a closed, clearly labeled container, cool and dry, and protected from moisture and incompatible substances.
