Confirming that a material is what its label says is foundational to good research. This overview describes how laboratories verify the identity of a research chemical, using documentation and standard analytical techniques.

Start with documentation

Before touching an instrument, check the material’s records: chemical name and identifiers (see chemical identifiers explained), lot number, and any Certificate of Analysis.

Analytical confirmation
